Parent FAQ
What benefits does my son receive from joining Phi Kappa Theta?
Phi Kappa Theta gives its members a unique student experience at the University of Missouri through a focus on our four values:
-
Leadership: Our members are developed into one of the brightest leaders on campus and into the community. From the moment a member joins, there are numerous opportunities for our members help lead our chapter. We encourage our members to get involved in other organizations and take on leadership roles.
-
Academics: As students first, we place a strong emphasis on academic achievement. Our members support each other academically, promoting dedication to our studies.
-
Brotherhood: Joining Phi Kappa Theta isn't like joining an other organization on campus; it's a life long connection you make with others. Our brothers support each other academically and socially.
-
Service: Phi Kappa Theta believes giving back to the community should be a priority for our members. Our brothers have extensive opportunities to preform community service.
What does it mean to be a candidate?
Being a candidate means that someone is going through our Candidate Program. Some other Greek organizations may refer to their members going through a similar new member education process as an associate member. At Phi Kappa Theta, candidates enjoy the same abilities and responsibilities as active, initiated members while going through the program
How is the candidate program different than "pledging"
Phi Kappa Theta Missouri Kappa Upsilon strives to be a new type of fraternal organization on campus and have done away with the tradition "pledge" process. Traditional pledging breeds a toxic culture and the possibility of hazing. As a firmly anti-hazing organization, we have created a modernized new member education program know as the Candidate Program. Throughout the eleven week program filled with chapter knowledge and professional development while being treated the exact same opportunities as initiated members. We believe this program better fosters the ability for new members to get to know and form relationships with active members before they are initiated. The Candidate Program has zero financial costs and members may withdraw at any moment in the program.
What is the financial commitment to the fraternity?
Phi Kappa Theta understands that many Greek organization are costly and may create financial burdens for some members. That's why we pride ourselves on having one of the lowest dues and fees of any fraternity at the University of Missouri.
Does Phi Kappa Theta Offer any scholarships?
Phi Kappa Theta provides any scholarship opportunities for its members that uphold our four core values. Numerous competitive awards are given each Spring to members based upon leadership, brotherhood, and service. Automatic academic scholarships ranging from $500-$1000 are awarded to our members for achieving GPA's at certain levels above a 3.5.
What about hazing and other risk?
The Missouri Kappa Upsilon Chapter of Phi Kappa Theta holds a firm anti-hazing stance within every inch of our organization. Any form of hazing at any time is strictly prohibited and is cause for the immediate termination of any member's membership and lease. We understand hazing has the likelihood to occur during traditional "pledge" processes, so we have completely done away with it. Instead, our modern and inclusive Candidate Program allows for those going through the new member education process to be just as involved as initiated members and promotes respect & brotherhood between candidates and initiated members. Candidates enjoy the same abilities and opportunities as initiated members and are oftentimes some of the most engaged men in our chapter. We hope to be a light in the Mizzou Greek community and expand our anti-hazing stance to more chapters on campus.
So Who's Actually in charge of the fraternity?
The Missouri Kappa Upsilon Chapter of Phi Kappa Theta is led by a group of our chapter's most brilliant members. Our chapter president leads a sixteen-person executive board who manages the operations of the chapter. We have a house director who serves as an immediate advisor to our officers and membership and provides house supervision. As a Mizzou Recognized Student Organization, we are held to high standards by the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life and the University Code of Conduct still applies to each of our members. Our chapter is also overseen by our Alumni Association and the Phi Kappa Theta National Organization.
Who is in charge of the Phi KAppa Theta Chapter House?
Built in 1927 and expanded in 2004, the Phi Kappa Theta chapter house is owned and operated by our alumni association. It is not considered a formal part of campus nor is it owned by the University or national Phi Kappa Theta Housing Corporation.
