Theta Kappa Phi was founded on October 1, 1919, on the Lehigh University campus with similar roots to Phi Kappa. Members of the university's Newman Club hoped to create an organization of Catholic men that would last long after their graduation. Theta Kappa Phi went on to charter 24 chapters throughout the United States

Phi Kappa and Theta Kappa Phi united to form Phi Kappa Theta on April 29, 1959. The University of Missouri was one of just four colleges in the nation that had a chapter of both fraternities. To preserve the history and heritage of the Kappa Chapter of Phi Kappa and the Upsilon Chapter of Theta Kappa Phi, the Phi Kappa Theta Chapter at Mizzou became know as Missouri Kappa Upsilon.
